Interview: Moran Rosenblatt On Finding Humor and Hope in ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’

Based on the New York Times bestseller by Georgia Hunter, We Were the Lucky Ones is an uplifting story of one family’s incredible persistence in the face of unimaginable circumstances. Five adult siblings and their parents are separated on the eve of World War II and the Holocaust, scattered across the world as they cling to the hope of finding their loved ones again someday.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak with actress Moran Rosenblatt, who plays Herta, the wife of Genek Kurc (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), about her role on the series. The Israeli actress has a range of credits to her name, including the comedy Kiss Me Kosher, which debuts on digital platforms on April 12^th.

Rosenblatt shared that she originally auditioned – three times – for the role of Genek’s sister Mila, who couldn’t be more different from Herta, and that she needed an unexpected inspiration to tap into Herta’s humor:

“I did what I always do for playing roles. I was looking for a reference, a real character, to channel her energy into Herta. This is what I was looking for. I was looking for someone very feminine, very brave, more feminine than me, more brave than me… I found it, actually, in this reality show. I love to take characters from a reality show and channel them into characters that I play. I can study them very cleanly.”

She was fortunate to find a terrific scene partner in Henry Lloyd-Hughes:

“The first time we met was in a Zoom meeting for all the cast. I think he was late, and he got on the Zoom and he didn’t stop talking for minutes. He kept making jokes. I don’t know what everybody felt about it, but I, immediately after the Zoom ended, I texted, I don’t remember if it was Erica, the showrunner, or Tommy, the director, but I texted thank you. He’s a perfect match for me. I was absolutely in love with him, because I think the whole cast, we are all wearing a shield of the first time meeting everybody and first impressions. We didn’t want to make any bad impression. He was very open-hearted at the very first moment. For me, I immediately fell in love with him and we were really, really good friends during the whole shoot.”
