Exciting times for Kevin Smith fans (and not just our editor Joey). Not only does it appear like he’s finished work on The 4:30 Movie, but it now has a home. In fact, the film is going to a place that has already been in the Kevin Smith business and presumably knows how to handle his work.
According to Deadline, Smith has sold the movie to Saban Films. They worked together on Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, so this is a distributor reunion of sorts. The film sounds like a love letter to cinema, with the added bonus of being shot in the actual theater that Smith grew up going to. So, this should be a pretty personal project. Smith plans to tour it like he did with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which did some very strong per-theater average business back then. More on this one when we have it.
The plot synopsis, as per the article, is as follows, along with the full cast:
Set in the summer of 1986, the coming-of-age comedy follows three sixteen-year-old friends (played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup) who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
The 4:30 Movie also stars Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Sam Richardson (Veep), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), and Method Man (Power Book II: Ghost).
