Two films in, Rose Glass is already a deeply unique cinematic voice. Saint Maud was a big swing her first time out, so it was clear that the filmmaker was not going to be someone to play it safe. Love Lies Bleeding certainly doubles down on that, as the movie is on a very specific wavelength. Armed with Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart, Glass establishes herself as a storyteller well worth following. I spoke to O’Brian here last week about the movie. Today, it’s Glass’ turn to chat.
In my review of Love Lies Bleeding (here), I had the following to say about Glass’ filmmaking:
Filmmaker Rose Glass has a definite sense of style on display here. Directing a script she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska, Glass has a fairly grounded story periodically interrupted with fantasy style elements. Love Lies Bleeding literally bleeds over into the surreal at certain moments, and while they easily could be excised and the film could have been a gritty romantic crime drama, the surrealism that pops up lends it an awful lot of personality. It really does feel like no one else would have made this movie like Glass does. That counts for a lot. The tone can be a bit all over the place and the ending leaves a bit to be desired, but the good definitely outweighs the bad.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Glass. We talk about the differences between this press tour and the prior one, as well as what actually pulling the film off meant to her. Glass is a really humble and interesting person to chat with. She’s made an incredibly compelling movie that you can’t help but want to discuss. I can’t wait to see what she does next. Once you check out Love Lies Bleeding, you’ll almost certainly agree…
Here now is my interview with Love Lies Bleeding co-writer/director Rose Glass. Enjoy:
