It’s Oscar Sunday today, but the box office is showing signs of life for the first time in a long time with a highly diversified slate this weekend! Dune: Part Two is continuing its momentum, raking in $46 million in its second weekend, and will likely leg out for the next month, even if blockbusters like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (two Empire-related blockbusters released a week apart from one another? In this economy?) may prevent it from reaching the top of the box office for some time.
As it was Spring Break for most of the schools this week, Kung Fu Panda 4 predictably climbed to the top spot despite a mixed critical reception from critics. While it may not have been the best of the franchise so far, the Kung Fu Panda brand is so strong that parents are bound to bring their children to see the movie. As such, the film grossed $58.3 million this weekend, the biggest debut for the franchise since the 2008 original! Like Dune: Part Two, it may also leg out, as there will be no family-oriented films until John Krasinski‘s IF releases in May.
It was also a great weekend for smaller-scale fare, with Blumhouse’s Imaginary finishing in third place with a $10 million tally, already making its budget back in one weekend. This happens as reviews for the movie aren’t entirely stellar, but most Blumhouse films are critic-proof due to their clever marketing tactics and low budgets. They almost always turn a profit, and their streak is once again undefeated.
Alejandro Gomez Monteverde has a new film out in cinemas with Cabrini, and has once again partnered with Angel Studios for its release. The film has made over $7.5 million in cinemas this weekend, over a rather large $50 million budget. Despite having much better reviews than his previous film, Sound of Freedom, the film may fall short of making a profit as the most controversial box office “hit” of the past year did.
On the international side, the Chinese film YOLO has impressively made over $840.000 in only 200 venues, making it one of the best per-screen averages of the year thus far. Because of this, Sony may plan to expand the movie next week as opposed to a purely limited affair.
