Interview: Sherry Cola Chats About Her Breakout Cinematic Year

Sony Pictures Classics

If you watched Joy Ride and Shortcomings last year, chances are you took notice of Sherry Cola. A scene-stealer of a supporting player, she gives some of the best comic relief of 2023. To just think about her as a comedian, however, sells her short. She’s got real acting chops, too. So, when an opporunity late last year came up to speak to her about her work from the past twelve months, I was more than game. Today, as my first published interview of 2024, I’m pleased to present my chat with Cola.

In my review of Joy Ride (here), I had this to say:

The quartet of Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, Ashley Park, and Sabrina Wu display some terrific chemistry. Park is our lead and has a real screen magnetism to her, while Cola (much like in Shortcomings) is phenomenal comic relief. Hsu is aces, as we all know by now, while Wu grows on you. Deadeye started out a little grating, but once they find their groove, everyone is on point. Supporting players include Desmond ChiamDaniel Dae KimMeredith HagnerAnnie MumoloTimothy Simons, and more.

Meanwhile, when it came to Shortcomings (here), I had the following to say out of Sundance:

Following up After Yang, Justin H. Min delivers a low-key turn that’s just as good, but completely different. He’s the perfect jerk with a good heart, forced to grow up. Sherry Cola is a riot, while Ally Maki is a dry maturity next to Min’s well-realized arrested development. In addition to Tavi Gevinson and Debby Ryan, supporting players in Shortcomings include Jacob BatalonSonoya Mizuno, and Timothy Simons, among others.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Cola. We talk about both projects, as well as her comedy career. We had started before recording began, so you all missed a very nice compliment she gave me, but she’s definitely good people. More over, she’s not just an absolutely hilarious performer, but a quality actress as well. 2023 really introduced her to audiences, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She’s truly going places…
