In a very short period of time, cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt has become one of the industry’s best. Now, part of that is that he’s collaborated with directors like David Fincher and Michael Mann. Fincher had him handling the cinematography on The Killer, while Mann employed him for his racing biopic Ferrari. I previously spoke to the DP about his work on Fincher’s Mank (here), for which he won an Oscar. Today, it’s his return, this time to discuss Ferrari.
In my review of Ferrari (found here), I had this to say about Mann’s filmmaking, of which Messerschmidt is a part:
Director Michael Mann films the hell out of the racing sequences. In particular, a later crash is not just surprising, but as horrifying as anything you’ve seen this year. Prepare to be shocked. He’s clearly fascinated with Enzo Ferrari and his world.
Below, you can hear my chat with Messerschmidt. Having seen him win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography after last we conversed, I made sure to remind him that Awards Radar is officially his good luck charm. Then, we got right down to. We spoke a bit about The Killer, of course (my rave review of that film is here), but the focus here is on Ferrari. It was fascinating hearing about why he wanted to make the movie, how he made it different than other car-centric features, as well as the differences between working with Fincher and Mann. It’s a great conversation, so give it a listen, as well as check out both flicks that he shot. You’ll almost certainly agree that he’s quickly become one of the best DP’s out there.
Here now is my interview with Ferrari cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt. Enjoy:
Ferrari is in theaters now!
