August has, historically, not been a good month for new movie releases. The films that come out during this 31 day period tend to be summer titles that would fall short earlier in the season. There’s also a bit of counter-programming, hoping to break through, but you have to look carefully to find them. Now, recent years have had some breakout hits, as well as quality flicks, so perhaps we’re moving beyond August being a dumping ground? Either way, it’s now an Awards Radar Community Question this weekend. Simply put, how do you feel about this month’s cinematic releases?
This year, August is a mixed bag. Now, of what has already come out, we have an under the radar gem in Shortcomings, alongside decent options like Dreamin’ Wild, Jules, Medusa Deluxe, Passages, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. There’s also lesser fare like The Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Meg 2: The Trench, The Pod Generation, and more. I’d only list Shortcomings as above and beyond, quality wise, but the outwardly bad titles have been fewer and further in between. So, that’s at least somewhat of a win, right? August will never be prime cinematic real estate, but it’s not being completely disrespected anymore, so there’s that.
Still to come, we have Blue Beetle, Bottoms (my review will be up soon, but spoiler alert: I loved it), Golda, Gran Turismo, Landscape with Invisible Hand, Strays, White Bird, and more. As you can see, the blockbuster season is nearly over, with just Blue Beetle left. Now, Bottoms is a gem, I can promise you that, but the rest of the lot are hoping to just capitalize on folks wanting something new. We’ll see how the month shapes up, but it’s been a relatively light one, though hardly the full on summer dumping ground that it used to be.
Now, we’re curious what you all think…how do you feel about this year’s August release? Are you excited for any? Is this still a dumping ground to you? However you feel, we’re very eager to find out. So, chime in now…
