Sunday Scaries: A ‘Clayface’ Horror Film Could Be One of the Most Exciting DC Projects…If It Happens

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today,

My favorite Batman villain is Clayface. Alter ego Basil Karlo, or more often, Matt Hagen, this member of the rogue’s gallery has always captivated me. In particular, the version from Batman: The Animated Series, which combined Karlo elements on to the Hagen character, just captured my attention. I’ve long wanted to see Clayface in a live action project, and apparently, there’s a chance that now could happen.

Recently, it came out that horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan had pitched DC a Clayface movie. Those same reports also speculate that the character could be some part of the plans for Matt ReevesThe Batman: Part Two. Both prospects are quite intriguing. Both could happen, too, and that makes them the most exciting potential DC projects out there.

Flanagan would be an especially good filmmaker for this project because of the type of horror he traffics in. Best known for Oculus and Doctor Sleep on the big screen, alongside The Haunting of Hill House and its spinoffs on the small screen, this is a director who loves horror. Flanagan exists right in between bland studio horror and elevated art house horror. He’s found a way to make genre work that feels important, while never skimping on the scares. When you think about who should helming Clayface, he’s pretty much the ideal storyteller.

Clayface would be a potential challenge in The Batman: Part Two due to his potential fantastical nature. However, there are two workarounds. One would be to come up with a new or at least tinkered with origin story. Flanagan certainly could figure something out. The other idea is just to take out the science fiction of it all. Leaning into the Karlo origin, even if he’s still Hagen, would fit this closer to the Reeves style right now. Otherwise, it will definitely stand out as its own thing.

We’ll see what comes of all of this, but a Clayface film, or if nothing else, the character in The Batman: Part Two, would be awesome. I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed, but it’s possible that we’re entering a period of time where DC will give this actual consideration. If so, it’ll be a step in the right direction, with a potential movie closer than ever before…

Stay tuned for another Sunday Scaries installment next week!
