Jeff Goldblum is in talks to star in Jon M. Chu‘s film adaptations of the major Broadway hit, Wicked. The project was first announced around ten years ago, going through a complicated development until things were put into motion last year, when the Crazy Rich Asians director joined the adaptation of the musical.
Goldblum would play the role of the Wizard, who at first is one of Oz’s biggest celebrities, only to later be revealed as a liar and an impostor. The cast of the films also include Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey. Production is scheduled to begin in January, with the two movies being filmed back-to-back.
Wicked is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, in turn based on L. Frank Baum‘s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film adaptation. The musical made its Broadway debut at the Gershwin Theater, where it still performs to this day.
The first Wicked film will release on Christmas Day 2024, while the second part will hit theaters a year later, on December 25th, 2025. The films have been pushed back multiple times over the past decade due to production issues and, later, the COVID-19 pandemic.
