Angelina Jolie to Play Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Next Film

Angelina Jolie has boarded Pablo Larraín‘s next biopic, on opera singer Maria Callas. After Jackie and Spencer, which respectively chronicled the life of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana Spencer, Larraín’s next movie will be titled Maria, and will tell the story of the singer’s final days in Paris before she died of a heart attack in 1977. Steven Knight, who wrote Spencer, will be penning the script.

In a statement, Larraín said that “having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”

Meanwhile, Jolie explained that she takes “very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”
