Predictions: Awards Radar TV’s 2022 Emmy Nominations // COMEDY

Expect lots of love for returning Emmy winners in Comedy categories, Ted Lasso and Hacks in the comedy categories. Only Murders in the Building and Abbott Elementary are the hottest new shows, and will Reservation Dogs, Our Flag Means Death, or Peacemaker manage to join them in the top races?
There are also many previously-celebrated shows back in contention, with Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel looking strongest and shows like Atlanta and What We Do in the Shadows subject to the whims of voters who may not be as enthusiastic about them anymore. With other returning options like The Flight Attendant, Insecure, and black-ish, will there be room for an endearing new show like Ghosts?

Below are the predictions of the Awards Radar TV team:

Ted Lasso (Apple TV+)

Hacks (HBO Max)

Barry (HBO)

Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)

Abbott Elementary (ABC)

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

Reservation Dogs (FX)

Ghosts (CBS)

Dark Horses
Atlanta (FX) //  What We Do in the Shadows (FX)

Fingers Crossed
Insecure (HBO)

There is a plethora of well-deserving series in this category and each has a narrative that leads them to a nomination. While we cannot say we are confident, we are betting on new series taking up half the spots. Honestly though, we will be glued to nomination announcements to see where the cards fall.

COMEDY Lead Actor

Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso, Apple TV+)

Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Bill Hader (Barry, HBO)

Donald Glover (Atlanta, FX)

Anthony Anderson (black-ish, ABC)

Dark Horse
Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death, HBO Max)

Fingers Crossed
John Cena (Peacemaker, HBO Max)

Darby’s work on Our Flag Means Death was not only hilarious, it was quite beautiful. While the top six seem pretty locked in, both Cena and Darby would be welcome surprises.

COMEDY Lead Actress

Jean Smart (Hacks, HBO Max)

Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon)

Issa Rae (Insecure, HBO)

Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant, HBO Max)

Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary)

Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish)

Dark Horse
Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Fingers Crossed
Elle Fanning (The Great, Hulu)

It seems like a crime to keep Selena Gomez hovering outside that last spot, but we struggle to choose who will possibly slip out of contention for her to do so.

COMEDY Supporting Actor

Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso, Apple TV+)

Anthony Carrigan (Barry, HBO)

Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Henry Winkler (Barry, HBO)

Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, FX)

Paul W. Downs (Hacks, HBO Max)

Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon)

Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Dark Horse
Brandon Scott Jones (Ghosts, CBS)

Fingers Crossed
Ben Schwartz (The After Party, Apple TV+)

If the voters are willing to look at the newer shows, then they have two of the standout performances of the year from Jones and Schwartz… and don’t forget Taika Waititi in Our Flag Means Death. It is another category chock full of amazing work. Hoping for a surprise or two here.

COMEDY Supporting Actress

Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso, Apple TV+)

Hannah Einbinder (Hacks, HBO Max)

Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Sarah Goldberg (Barry, HBO)

Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, FX)

Juno Temple (Ted Lasso, Apple TV+)

Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon)

Janelle James, (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Fingers Crossed

Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker, HBO Max)

Again, what a category! So many great performances to choose from. It looks like most names are locked in but Aidy Bryant’s goodbye season may earn a few votes.
