Here’s potentially the most exciting (and surprising!) movie-related news in a long time. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Lady Gaga is currently in talks to join Todd Phillips‘ Joker: Folie à deux as Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character. Both of them are currently deep in negotiations with Warner Bros. to appear in the film, with Phillips having posted a picture of Phoenix reading the screenplay last week after he announced the sequel’s official title.
Since Joker is set in a universe detached from the DCEU (Margot Robbie plays Quinn in that universe), Gaga would play Quinn, and the movie, interestingly enough, would also be a musical. It’s quite the contrast from the 2019 movie, which painted a dark, and twisted tale of Arthur Fleck’s descent into madness, so having your sequel be a musical sounds very weird.
Nonetheless, it certainly makes for an interesting follow-up from the original, which made over $1 billion at the box office and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards in 2020, winning two, including Phoenix as Best Actor. Time will tell if the risk will indeed pay off.
