The true story of the death of Conrad Roy, a teenager who died by suicide in 2014 in Massachusetts, made headlines because of the role that his girlfriend Michelle Carter played in encouraging him by text to end his own life. Hulu’s The Girl from Plainville dramatizes those events, with Colton Ryan portraying Roy and Elle Fanning playing Carter.
Awards Radar had the chance to speak with Ryan about connecting with and representing Roy, as well as his other roles in projects like Little Voice and the Dear Evan Hansen movie. On whether he had any worry that he wouldn’t be able to honor Roy’s legacy, here’s what Ryan had to say:
“I had worry, but not in that way. Listen, I didn’t write the words, but I loved them. I remember reading them, and in line with all the research that I did, getting to know him, which they were very supportive of and gave me the keys to the kingdom in terms of all the research they had, I didn’t feel as much worry as I felt weight. But it wasn’t heavy, if that makes sense. As I got to know him more and more, I just felt so seen myself. I fell head over heels in love with this kid.”
