This year, we will be treated to two readaptations of Carlo Collodi‘s The Adventures of Pinocchio, with Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson working on a stop-motion animated musical for Netflix, and Robert Zemeckis remaking Disney’s 1940 animated film into live-action, with Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, Giuseppe Battinson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan Michael-Key, Lorraine Bracco, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the voice of Pinocchio.
Directed by Zemeckis, with a screenplay co-written by the Back to the Future filmmaker and Chris Weitz, the movie will be released on 2022’s Disney+ Day, September 8th, which will lead up to the 2022 edition of D23 Expo, taking place from September 9 to 11, for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Its plot synopsis reads: “Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis directs this live-action retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, the wood carver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his own son.”
