Interview: Rhys Darby on Playing a Gentleman Pirate in ‘Our Flag Means Death’

New Zealand native Rhys Darby is a very talented and funny performer, best known for playing hapless band manager Murray Hewitt on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords. Now, Darby is back on television and collaborating with fellow Kiwi Taika Waititi, following their work together on What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. In HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, Darby plays Stede Bonnet, a real-life “gentleman pirate” whose life is just slightly exaggerated for comedic effect.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak with Darby about his interest in the show, working with Waititi, and what could be next for Stede.

On his own relationship with pirates before the show, here’s what Darby had to say:

“I wasn’t big on pirates. I enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, watching it with my kids, but other than that, I didn’t have much exposure to pirates. I don’t know even if I even dressed up. My son, my youngest, was definitely into pirates, so I enjoyed a little bit of pirate time. Myself growing up, I was always more into knights and castles and ninjas.”

Season One of Our Flag Means Death is streaming on HBO Max.
