Sebastian Stan is much more than just Bucky Barnes. Sure, he’s probably best known for playing the character formerly known as The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but as good as he is there, it does him a disservice to simply label him a superhero. He’s equally adept at being a hero as being a villain, which he does to amazing effect in Fresh. Especially in smaller and more idiosyncratic work, he really shines. When I saw the movie back in January at the Sundance Film Festival, I knew I had to talk to Stan about the work. Luckily, that finally got to happen a few days ago. So, as the flick hits Hulu, we’re thrilled to present this chat to you all.
This is some of what I had to say about Sebastian Stan in Fresh, via my rave review out of Sundance:
Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones make quite the pair here. When they’re flirting and in a budding relationship, it’s not just clever, but actually somewhat romantic. Then, when things take a turn, so too does their interactions. Again, I won’t say more, but how this does still manage to mimic dating is quite the accomplishment. Edgar-Jones is a strong heroine, while Stan mixes charm and danger with aplomb. The surprises are truly surprising, in no small part to these two.
Below, you can see my conversation with Stan. We focus on Fresh, though in talking about his villainous turn in the film, I had to bring up, briefly, Hot Tub Time Machine. It makes sense in context of the discussion, I can assure you. He and Daisy Edgar-Jones are so great here, in a project I hope you go in somewhat cold to. The less you know, the better, since the surprises work even better. I can’t recommend the film enough, so check out this talk with Stan and I, but don’t you dare sleep on this bonkers little movie…
Here now is my interview with Fresh star Sebastian Stan. Enjoy:
Fresh is available to stream on Hulu right now!
