2021 NYFCC Results Surprise with ‘Drive My Car’

Janus Films

While not always the best predictor for the Oscars, the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) is one of the first critics groups to make their picks for the best of the year. The Gotham Awards and National Board of Review have come out with their awards thus far, naming films The Lost Daughter and Licorice Pizza as the best of 2021.

The NYFCC picks reflect a wide range in film, honoring not only independent features, but those that are considered Oscar contenders as well. Though sometimes unconventional, the NYFCC is one of the first indications of what is to come during awards season.

Below are the list of the newly announced winners:

Best Film: Drive My Car

Best Director: Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog

Best Screenplay: Licorice Pizza

Best Actress: Lady Gaga, The House of Gucci
