Hulu’s new series Dopesick adapts Beth Macy’s nonfiction book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America, shining a light on the human cost of the opioid epidemic. Executive producer and writer Danny Strong had a major role in bringing the startling and eye-opening story to the small screen.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak to Strong about discovering the truth, shifting through the various sets of characters and timelines on the show, and why he’s never cast himself in any of his projects. Take a look:
