Were you a fan of Cathy Yan‘s female-led comic book team-up film Birds of Prey, starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett, and Rosie Perez? If so, then you’re in luck because one of the titular characters is getting her own spinoff film in the near future.
Today, it was announced that Smollett would reprise her role as Black Canary / Dinah Lance in an upcoming Birds of Prey spinoff film, to be written by Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) for release on the HBO Max streaming service.
Birds of Prey was a surprising box office failure for the DC Extended Universe, even if all signs pointed to it being a success. It was the second time Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn in the franchise and headlined the film, leading the studio to believe the movie would perform well financially due to her leading role.
But although the film earned less than the studio hoped for, it seems as though they aren’t ready to give up on the titular characters quite yet. At the moment, there are no details as to the plot of the Black Canary film, nor additional cast members or a release window.
