There has been very little seen of West Side Story aside from a trailer revealed back in April during the Oscars telecast. However, a “Special Look” has just been revealed and shows off a little more of what we can expect from the musical adaptation.
Before getting to the trailer, here is a quick synopsis of the film: an adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose and Ansel Elgort. It is set to release on December 10th, 2021.
This special look does take some of the moments from the first trailer, in particular the shot of the shadows of the two gangs coming face-to-face. However, this trailer also highlights the fact that this is a musical and will contain some fantastic choreography and soundtrack. Not only that, but the voice clip of Rachel Zegler’s character, Maria, saying that she is Puerto Rican is a strong message to get across and is a good sign that the film is focusing on representation within this particular story.
