Joey’s Home Movies For the Week of June 21st – ‘Stardust’ Examines Young David Bowie

Welcome back to my Home Movies! Today, we have the David Bowie biopic Stardust leading the way, though it’s a pretty light slate. The options this week are rather limited, though this stands out, film wise. There’s some decent television options, as well as a new Criterion release, too. So, it’s not a total loss. Read on for more…

Joey’s Top Pick

IFC Films

Stardust

The challenge in making a David Bowie movie without any Bowie music must have been staggering. However, in focusing on the character and figuring out what made the man tick, this flick became something else. Less a biopic and more of a meditation, it’s a well-acted work, with performances of note from Johnny Flynn, Jena Malone, and Marc Maron. Keep your expectations in check with Stardust, but Bowie fans at least should definitely give it a shot.

Pickup on South Street

From The Criterion Collection: “Petty crook Skip McCoy (Richard Widmark) has his eyes fixed on the big score. When the cocky three-time convict picks the pocketbook of unsuspecting Candy (Jean Peters), he finds a more spectacular haul than he could have imagined: a strip of microfilm bearing confidential U.S. information. Tailed by manipulative Feds and the unwitting courier’s Communist puppeteers, Skip and Candy find themselves in a precarious gambit that pits greed against redemption, right against Red, and passion against self-preservation. With its dazzling cast and writer-director Samuel Fuller’s signature hard-boiled repartee and raw energy, Pickup on South Street is a true film noir classic by one of America’s most passionate cinematic craftspeople.”
