Have you met Aunty Donna, yet? If not, you are not alone. But if you are a fan of comedy you definitely you should introduce yourself to their work. That’s right, Aunty Donna is not a single person (well actually – learn more about that story in the interview) they are a comedy team out of Australia who deliver a unique and unpredictable brand of humor many compare to Monty Python. While that surely is a huge compliment, the comedy they produce is more in a category all their own. Their original six-part Netflix sketch series Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun includes parody, satire, clever wordplay, musical numbers, and straight up hilarious.
I had the pleasure to sit down with Aunty Donna members, Mark Samual Bonanno, Broden Kelly, and Zachary Ruane for a wild interview that covered everything from Moneyball‘s exercise authenticity and Back to the Future shirts (which, little to my knowledge turn out to be considered offensive in Australia – sorry guys!) to their comedy inspirations, and the upcoming Toboggan Awards (no connection to The Emmys). I was even treated to the serenade of a lifetime – a catchy tune you will have stuck in your head for days. This and much more is covered in one of the most entertainingly off-the-rails interviews I have ever conducted.

If you are new to them, check out the trailer first. If you are like me, it will only take about 10 seconds to convince you to not only to watch the series, but that these guys are some of the funniest, most creative minds out there. And don’t get me wrong, I am not only saying this just because of the mysterious letter that arrived after the interview, written in cut out magazine letters telling me to do so (although it was crossed out I could make out the signature, “Sincerely your new Australian interview friends, Mark, Zachary and Broden.”)
It is no wonder that they have attracted some of the biggest names in comedy Ed “Egg” Helms, Kristen Schaal, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Paul F. Thompkins, “Jerry Seinfeld” and even former President Abraham Lincoln.
Please, enjoy my conversation with Mark, Broden and Zachary. After viewing check out their variety sketch series Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun on Netflix. I am sure the one phrase that will stick in your mind will Toboggan-worthy.
