With Godzilla vs. Kong storming through theaters currently and hitting HBO Max on Wednesday, director Adam Wingard has announced his next big project.
Per Deadline, the filmmaker will be teaming up with Warner Bros. again to direct an adaptation of the animated TV series Thundercats. The project is based on an early script from David Coggeshall, which will be rewritten by Wingard and his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.
The big-budget film will apparently be a mix of CGI and animation, telling the story of a group of cat-like humanoid aliens who are forced to flee their dying planet Thundera.
Wingard has said that the film will use the series as a “jumping-off point” before heading in its own original direction. It’s perhaps a surprising move from the man behind movies like You’re Next and The Guest, but apparently this version of Thundercats is something Wingard has been wanting to make for years.
With new clout from the financial and critical success of Godzilla vs. Kong (read our review here), Wingard is looking to cash that check on a massive scale passion project, and WB is here to let him do it.
