Emerald Fennell Set to Write ‘Zatanna’ for DC Films and Bad Robot

Promising Young Woman writer/director Emerald Fennell has found her next project. According to Deadline, Fennell is set to write the screenplay for DC’s upcoming Zatanna movie, co-produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, through their deal with Warner Brothers.

Zatanna is a highly popular DC comics hero and has been portrayed in the DC Animated Movie Universe by Camilla Luddington in Justice League Dark (2017) and its sequel, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020). Serinda Swan has also portrayed her in the final three seasons of The CW’s Smallville on television. However, this will be the first time Zatanna will make her live-action feature film debut for a theatrical production.

It is unknown, at this moment, whether or not Fennell will direct the project, but this news comes in the day after her Writers Guild of America Best Original Screenplay win for Promising Young Woman, which adds to the number of award nominations her film has gotten, including being the first female filmmaker to be nominated as Best Director at the 93rd Academy Awards for a feature film debut. Her film is also nominated for four other Oscars, including Best Picture.

No release date has been announced as of yet, but Zatanna is already shaping up to be a promising (no pun intended) superhero flick. Fennel has been making lots of noise for her movie, since its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, so this is definitely a movie (and a filmmaker) to look out for in the next few years.
