There’s only a few short weeks left before everyone will finally be able to witness what the long-awaited Zack Snyder’s Justice League actually looks like. Luckily for Zack Snyder fans, the wait for his next release after that won’t be a long one.
Netflix has released the first teaser for Snyder’s Army of the Dead, a return to a genre Snyder has some familiarity with. In 2004, the fanboy favorite director began his career with his remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, a widely successful project that some still consider his best film.
While the two pictures are unrelated, the prospect of Snyder returning to the genre that first made him, and marking his first project outside of the DCEU superhero world in a decade, is an intriguing one, at the very least.
Army of the Dead centers around a group of mercenaries in Las Vegas who attempt a dangerous bank heist in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Dave Bautista takes on the leading role, with Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raul Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, and Matthias Schweighöfer rounding out the cast.
Netflix is betting big on the film, having already wrapped shooting on a prequel starring, and directed by, Schweighöfer. That film co-stars Nathalie Emmannuel, Guz Khan, and Stuart Martin. Netflix has also already announced an animated TV show set in this world, titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.
It’s a pretty big bet, with Netflix very much putting the horse before the cart, but given Snyder’s fanbase, the enduring appeal of zombie-based media for audiences, and Netflix’s massive subscriber base, chances are this is one that is going to pay off big for the streamer and mark the beginning of a whole new franchise.
Army of the Dead releases on Netflix on May 21, 2021. See the teaser below:
