Are you ready for some Kombat? Perhaps some… Mortal Kombat? Warner Bros. and HBO Max have released the trailer for the new video game adaptation in all of its redband glory, giving you a taste of what to expect when the movie drops on April 16th, 2021.
You’ll perhaps remember that the iconic, still running, video game franchise was previously adapted to the screen twice in the mid 1990s, first with Mortal Kombat in 1995, followed by its sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997. Both films were maligned critically (Annihilation has a stunning 2% on Rotten Tomatoes), but did pretty well financially. The franchise was dormant for over two decades, and now returns with this rebooted attempt to revitalize the IP for the big screen (or streaming).
The new Mortal Kombat marks the feature directing debut for Simon McQuoid, with James Wan as the big name attached as a producer. The cast includes some fan favorite characters, like Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, and Sub-Zero, played by Joe Taslim. Joining them are Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Mehcad Brooks as Jax.
Originally scheduled for a January 15th release, the movie was pushed back a few months after WB announced their controversial decision to make their full slate available on HBO Max the same day as they will release in theaters.
