Interview: Owen Asztalos Discusses His Breakthrough Performance in ‘Hillbilly Elegy’

If you’ve seen Hillbilly Elegy, it’s likely you ended the film thinking about Owen Asztalos. Whether the movie moved you or fell flat, Asztalos managed to walk away with it, and that’s truly no small achievement. After all, he’s acting opposite Amy Adams, Haley Bennett, and Glenn Close. Especially in the cases of Adams and Close, that’s two A-list actresses and perpetual Oscar nominees. To be best in show against mainstay Academy Award contenders, that’s something. Currently seen also in The Flight Attendant, Asztalos is going places, that’s for sure. So, given the chance to chat with him about Hillbilly Elegy, as well as his young career, I jumped at the chance. The resulting conversation took place late last year, but if now available for your enjoyment.

You can see (and hear) my interview with Asztalos below. We obviously talk plenty about Hillbilly Elegy, including his experiences with the cast, as well as Ron Howard. He even does a fun impression of Howard that you’ll definitely want to check out. There’s also a lot just about where he’d like his career to go, and it’s clear that kid has a good head on his shoulders. If nothing else, this discussion is a big clue that we’re going to be hearing his name a lot in the very near future. I often like to say that I want to be on the ground floor for some exciting new careers, and this is certainly an example of that. Asztalos is the real deal, and if he doesn’t get awards attention for Hillbilly Elegy, he will for something else very soon…

Here now is my conversation with Owen Asztalos. I hope you all enjoy:

In case you just want the audio, that can be heard below, so give that a listen:
