‘Our Friend’ Trailer Highlights a Trio of Strong Performances

A trailer has dropped for the new film Our Friend, starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson and Oscar winner Casey Affleck. Directed by Gabriela CowperthwaiteOur Friend is written by Brad Ingelsby, based on the 2015 Esquire article, “The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word” by Matthew Teague. Teague, a journalist who is also credited as an executive producer on the film, wrote about his experiences when his best friend came to live with his family when his wife, Nicole, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Our Friend is based on Teague’s real-life story, with Affleck playing Teague, Segel playing his best friend Dane, and Johnson playing Nicole.

Originally titled The Friend, Cowperthwaite’s feel-good tearjerker has been making the festival rounds since early 2019, and is finally getting a release, following warm receptions everywhere it’s played. This is Cowperthwaite’s second narrative film, following 2017’s Megan Leavey, another heartwarming film based on a true story. Cowperthwaite also directed the searing 2013 documentary, Blackfish, which took down Sea World by revealing the cruel and inhumane treatments of the star orcas at their theme parks.
