Warner Bros. Announces a December 15th Release for ‘Tenet’ on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that Tenet, its highly-anticipated, big-budget Christopher Nolan action epic, will be released on home entertainment platforms in December, bringing full circle the dramatic narrative of 2020 for the movie industry.

Tenet was widely considered the movie that would save movie theatres as it was the only major studio release that held its commitment to being shown only in theatres, honoring writer/director/producer Nolan’s loyalty to the big screen. However, upon its release in theatres in August, Tenet became another victim of the worldwide pandemic, as audiences, either fearful of the disease or living in a location where there were no theatres open at all, generally stayed away. Even though the film did end up still grossing $350 million worldwide, that number is nowhere near what it would have made in a normal year.

And now, even with theatrical runs still being hoped for in Los Angeles and New York, where movie theatres have been closed since March, Tenet will be released on 4K, Blu Ray, DVD and Digital on December 15.

The 4K UHD and Blu-ray will contain the special feature, Looking at the World in a New Way: The Making of Tenet, an hour-long exploration of the development and production of the film as told by the cast and crew.

Being able to finally see this film from the safety of our homes should make any cinephile or Nolan fan happy. And, for a film described as confusing by the generous and an utter mess by those less so, it might do it justice to finally have it in a format friendly for multiple viewings, because, as the studio’s own synopsis indicates, this movie is supposed to be puzzling:  “Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist (John David Washington) journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.”

Tenet will be available to preorder from digital and physical retailers beginning November 10.
