Star Trek: Lower Decks continues to capture my interest with every new episode. Season 4 was no exception to this. I could view some of the outlying worlds the live-action series left untouched. The flyover worlds and cultures that I wanted to know more about, but would only get casual mentions of. These things drove the Creator/Executive Producer of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Mike McMahan, while writing the series. Recently, McMahan stopped by The ‘Verse! to chat with me and my Co-Host, Lucas Longacre. (You can listen to it in its entirety, below.)
Season 4 continues to explore the quirkier nature of Star Trek through our five “Lower Deckers”, who have just recently been promoted. McMahan talked to us about the importance of using comedy respectfully within the Star Trek Universe. About growing and continuing legacy characters, worlds, and cultures. And about writing stories balanced for new viewers and seasoned Trekkies alike.
McMahan expanded on that by using the crossover episode with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as an example. “I’ll tell you right now, a Lower Decks script and a Strange New Worlds script look identical. Like you’re just writing Star Trek. They’re using costumes and computer-generated ships. And I’m using animated ships, but we’re both writing Star Trek, you know? But when you watch it, it feels like a Lower Decks episode and a Strange New Worlds episode. That’s the real miracle of it.”
While we spoke to McMahan about the success of Season 4, we also talked about the shocking revelation that the upcoming Season 5 would be the last. The news of the show’s seemingly abrupt ending sent fans into a whirlwind of speculation.
“For me, it’s like, I’m greedy. I would have kept making this show forever, but getting five seasons is such a miracle. It’s insane that this show even existed. Every season I felt like was a miracle. There are grand stories I’m telling for the characters in Lower Decks. So season five feels like an amazing sendoff. It feels like the end of a chapter, but not the end of a series. I had enough time to know that it had to be special.” McMahan teased of season five.
