Sunday Scaries: I’m Very Curious to See What Radio Silence Makes Next

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re taking another look at one of the most interesting horror teams working today, especially as their careers are at a very intriguing point…

Last week, Abigail hit theaters (reviewed here by Myles). I also liked the film, if slightly less than he did, but still enjoying it a lot. We went over that during the last podcast episode here, but today, I’m thinking about Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind the flick. Specifically, after this Universal monster movie of sorts and finished with the Scream franchise, I’m fascinated with what they might be up to next.

As I’ve previously stated, Radio Silence consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett as directors, with Chad Villella their main producer (Justin Martinez was another founder, originally). With the Scream pictures they helmed, as well as AbigailWilliam SherakPaul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment are producers (Vanderbilt having written both Scream sequels the collective did). The writer for Abigail was Stephen Sheilds, with revisions by Guy Busick, who was also part of the Scream deals.

When I wrote about them in a prior Sunday Scaries piece here, I had the following to say, in part, about what ultimately became Abigail:

Now, I’m on record as being a big fan of Radio Silence. Not just their Scream work, either, even though you’ve seen me write about it hereherehere, and here. I also adore Ready or Not, as well as finding their V/H/S segment a highlight. They have a sneaky sense of humor, as well as a penchant for knowing how and when to use gore. Truly, they have a feel for horror that’s relatively rare to see these days.

If they are tackling a Universal Monster, that just seems like a blast in the making. There’s a rumor that this project was originally known as Dracula’s Daughter, which would make it a vampire flick. I’ve been on the record as wanting more of those in a previous Sunday Scaries piece here, so I’d be in. Even if it were a different monster strand they’re pulling from, this team has such originality to their visions, I’d expect tremendous fun.

We currently don’t know what they’re planning to do next, but the horror world is more or less their oyster. They’ve already handled a franchise, so that’s not an obvious pivot. I certainly hope they mix comedy with their horror, utilize some fun gore, and remain true to themselves. If they do wind up with IP again, I hope they can re-launch a series in their own image. If it’s something completely original, I hope it’s with a big enough budget that their vision isn’t compromised.

No matter what they tackle, Radio Silence has my attention as top notch genre filmmakers. They never make a movie that’s anything less than interesting, with some terrific craftsmanship. The more they’re let off the leash, the better, in fact. I can’t wait to find out what their next effort is, since where they go next will tell us so much about the next act of their career…

Stay tuned to see what the next Radio Silence project turns out to be!
