Interview: Stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller Discuss ‘The Zone of Interest’

Sandra Hüller is having a hell of a year. Between Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, she’s at the forefront of acting in 2023. In particular with the latter title, the degree of difficulty is so high, it’s almost incredible to consider that she pulled it off. You really just have to stand in awe of her. A few weeks ago, fellow star of the movie Christian Friedel joined Hüller to talk about this ambitious work. With The Zone of Interest just days away from release, the discussion comes your way today.

In my review out of the Telluride Film Festival (here), I praised the performances like so:

Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel are chillingly good here. They could easily be playing any power couple, and that’s the point. Hüller’s status obsessed Hedwig turns on a steeliness when her way of life is potentially threatened. Friedel’s Rudolf is a middle manager, through and through. They bring these ordinary aspects to life, elevating the chilling nature of the film.

Below, you can see my conversation with Friedel and Hüller. I wanted to hear about how they managed to essay these characters, given the subject matter. They spend a lot of time praising filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, with his style really leading the way. In particular, they have a lot to say about his use of multiple cameras, which is really interesting. The Zone of Interest is not easy viewing, but it’s an experience that serious cinephiles should definitely check out, when the film begins its theatrical run this weekend…
