Fresh off of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Netflix is in talks to acquire Anna Kendrick‘s Woman of the Hour for a whopping $11 million. Kendrick makes her feature directorial debut with a screenplay written by Ian MacAlliser McDonald.
In addition to directing, Kendrick also stars in the film alongside Daniel Zovatto, Tony Hale, Nicolette Robinson, Kathryn Gallagher, and Kelley Jakle. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the movie did not sign a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement before the festival, which has allowed a sale to a streaming studio. If this goes through, it would be the biggest acquisition of a movie at this year’s festival edition.
Our editor-in-chief Joey Magidson saw the movie at TIFF and praised its impressive directorial debut for Kendrick and said it was one of the best films playing at the festival this year: “In making her directorial debut, Kendrick takes a script from Ian MacAllister McDonald and films the hell out of it. Jumping between time periods, slick editing, and holding on some very unsettling shots, it all suggests a veteran storyteller. She’s able to ratchet up the tension in a manner that rivals many horror filmmakers. The screenplay clearly inspired her, leading to a work that is justifiably angry at the way women are ignored. In doing so, she also manages to make a super strong genre work.” You can read his full review of the movie here.
